Summary:
Sexual expression is a complex clinical issue within residential care. The noted lack of clear policies, approach to assessment and education has resulted in practices that are often prohibitive, and may not support the resident(s) rights and need for companionship. Key factors influencing action include the culture of the Home, interpretation of legislation, and defining sexual expression. This webinar presents a clinical point of view on sexual expression in Long-Term Care, highlighting case illustrations and the development of a drafted resident-centered document to guide dialogue. Cases will review common challenges in assessing and supporting sexual expression, and examples of how different behavioural expressions are (mis)perceived as having sexual intent. These cases will be discussed in light of the Lanark, Leeds, and Grenville Working Group’s draft of Intimacy and Sexuality in Long-Term Care: A guide to practice: resource tools for assessment and documentation (2013) grounded by the P.I.E.C.E.S. Team Approach.
